Kenya’s youth unemployment challenge is getting a powerful response. The National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) Programme, a flagship initiative under President William Ruto’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), is providing a direct pathway from joblessness to enterprise. Backed by the World Bank, this five-year project is not just handing out cash; it is building a generation of entrepreneurs and skilled workers.

This guide provides a complete walkthrough on how to access the KES 50,000 business grant and other life-changing opportunities under the NYOTA Programme.

What is the NYOTA Programme?

NYOTA (National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement) is a comprehensive youth empowerment project launched by the Kenyan government in partnership with the World Bank. It is designed to tackle youth unemployment by providing a blend of financial support, skills training, and work experience.

The programme targets over 820,000 vulnerable youth across all 1,450 wards in Kenya. It is structured around four key interventions:

InterventionTargetBenefit
Business Support100,000 youthKES 50,000 grant, business training, and mentorship.

Who is Eligible for the NYOTA Grant?

To qualify for the NYOTA Programme, applicants must meet specific criteria, which are strictly verified during the application process.

Core Eligibility Requirements:

  • Citizenship: Must be a Kenyan citizen with a valid National ID card.
  • Age: Between 18 and 29 years. Persons with disabilities (PWDs) are eligible up to 35 years.
  • Education: Applicants should have a maximum of a Form Four (KCSE) education. Those with tertiary or university qualifications are not eligible for this specific grant.
  • Employment Status: Must be unemployed, underemployed, or low-income.
  • SIM Registration: You must have a SIM card registered in your own name matching your ID number.
  • Financial Discipline: Hustler Fund defaulters are not eligible for NYOTA, as they are considered a credit risk.

📌 Special Consideration: The programme prioritizes women (targeting 50% of slots), persons with disabilities (5% reserved), youth in refugee camps (Kakuma and Dadaab), and those from marginalized communities.

How to Apply for the NYOTA KES 50,000 Grant

The application process is completely free and has been designed to be accessible via basic mobile phones. There is no need for internet access or a physical application form.

Step 1: USSD Application

  1. Dial *254# from your mobile phone (the one registered in your name).
  2. From the main menu, select the “NYOTA Project” option.
  3. Choose your preferred intervention:
    • Business Support (for the KES 50,000 grant)
    • On-the-Job Experience (for training and stipend)
    • Learning & Practice / Recognition of Prior Learning.
  4. Fill in your personal details as prompted, including:
    • Full name
    • National ID number
    • Date of birth/Age
    • Education level
    • County and ward of residence
    • Employment status
  5. Submit your application.

Step 2: Entrepreneurship Aptitude Test (EAT)

If you applied for the Business Support component, you will be required to complete an Entrepreneurship Aptitude Test to assess your business mindset and readiness.

  • Send the word “NYOTA” to the shortcode 40270.
  • Answer the 19 questions prompted by the system.

Step 3: Physical Verification

Shortlisted applicants will be invited for an in-person verification exercise at designated centres in their constituencies.

What to bring:

  • Your original National ID card (or PWD card).
  • Ensure your details match what you submitted.

What they check:

  • Identity and residency in your ward.
  • Your education level and employment status (priority for unemployed youth).

What Happens After Application?

1. Selection and Notification

After verification, a fair and transparent digital random selection process is conducted. Successful applicants are notified via official SMS from NYOTA.

2. Training and Mentorship

Beneficiaries must undergo a mandatory training program on business development, financial literacy, and life skills before receiving any funds. This training is delivered by accredited trainers from the Micro and Small Enterprises Authority (MSEA) and partner institutions.

3. Grant Disbursement

The KES 50,000 grant is disbursed in two phases:

  • Phase 1: KES 25,000 is provided after completing the initial training to kick-start the business.
  • Phase 2: An additional KES 25,000 is released later after the beneficiary demonstrates business progress and completes follow-up mentorship sessions.

The Government of Kenya has announced that the second tranche of these grants will be disbursed by June 30, 2026.

How is the Money Disbursed?

The funds are disbursed through secure digital platforms to ensure transparency and accountability.

  • KES 22,000 is paid directly to the beneficiary to start their business.
  • KES 3,000 is automatically channeled to the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) as compulsory savings through the “Haba Haba” scheme.

All NYOTA participants are automatically enrolled in this NSSF savings plan, with the government encouraging a culture of saving and financial security.

Important Things to Know

Beware of Scams

The NYOTA Programme is completely free of charge. You should never pay anyone money to register, secure a slot, or fast-track your application. Only use the official USSD code *254# and official government channels.

Multiple Pathways

Even if you are not selected for the Business Support grant, you can still benefit from the On-the-Job Experience component, which offers a KES 6,000 monthly stipend and practical training for six months.

As of June 2026, the government reported that 122,147 youth had already benefited from the programme, with over 99% having established businesses following training.
