In 1974, Mobutu Sese Seko the president and authoritarian ruler of Zaire, the country now known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, helped bring two American boxing legends, Muhammad Ali and George Foreman, to Kinshasa for the Rumble in the Jungle.

Foreman was the reigning heavyweight champion and was widely considered the strongest favourite. He had demolished formidable opponents, including Joe Frazier. Ali, a former heavyweight champion, was seen by many observers as an underdog.

The event brought international attention to Zaire and was poised to help Mobutu Sese Seko promote his nationalist image. His government supported and financed the spectacle as part of its effort to place Zaire on the world stage.

The fight was also a strategy crafted by government bureaucrats and advisors as part of Mobutu Sese Seko’s domestic propaganda campaign following severe economic repression,10000% hyperinflation rate, overtaxation, corruption, debt burden, institutional meltdown, deteriorating public services and the concentration of wealth in the hands of a few government-aligned elites, while the masses suffered hunger despite the country’s vast mineral wealth.

The boxing spectacle was huge but could not resolve the deeper problems of corruption, economic decline, poverty and authoritarian rule among the citizens of Zaire.

In 1997,rebel forces overthrew Mobutu, ending his decades-long Afterwards he fled into exile and died in Morocco on 7 September 1997.

Sport can create a moment of national excitement, but it cannot permanently replace good governance, economic opportunity or public trust. A government may control the political stage and attract international attention, but lasting stability depends on economic stewardship, accountable institutions and the confidence of its citizens.
