A popular Inooro TV presenter has been fired after making deeply demeaning remarks against former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on live television, in an incident that sent shockwaves across the Mt Kenya region and triggered a fierce public backlash that ultimately cost him his job.

Inooro TV is a sister station of Citizen TV and forms part of the Royal Media Services empire owned by media mogul SK Macharia.

According to reliable sources, Nderitu Waihura, who co-hosted the popular Kiririmbi show alongside Michael Njenga, has been shown the door following the controversy. Waihura’s downfall came after he was captured on live television expressing his feelings about Gachagua in terms that viewers in the Mt Kenya region found utterly unacceptable.

The incident occurred during a mid-morning show when a panelist, Chinga Ward MCA aspirant Waithaka wa Kinyua, repeatedly referenced his party leader, Rigathi Gachagua, during the discussion. The repeated mentions appeared to push Waihura over the edge, and in a moment that was captured and shared widely across social media, he declared on air that the mere sight of Gachagua made him feel like vomiting.

The clip went viral almost immediately, igniting fierce debate across Facebook, TikTok and X about media neutrality and the conduct expected of journalists and television presenters when handling political figures.

But beyond the debate, the reaction from viewers in the Mt Kenya region was swift, organised and decisive. Angry viewers who regard Gachagua as the undisputed political kingpin of the region wrote formal protest letters directly to SK Macharia and the station’s management, demanding accountability for what they described as a deliberate and calculated act of disrespect towards their leader.

The management listened. Waihura has since been fired, a development that has further divided audiences, with one camp applauding the decision as a necessary defence of journalistic standards and respect, and another raising concerns about whether media houses should bow to public pressure when making editorial and staffing decisions.

What is clear is that in the Mt Kenya region, disrespecting Rigathi Gachagua on live television carries consequences that extend well beyond a viral moment on social media.
