A police officer accused of seriously injuring her girlfriend after an alleged violent confrontation in Nairobi is now being sought by detectives as investigations into the incident gather pace.
The case has drawn public attention due to the nature of the allegations and the senior position held by the suspect in the National Police Service.
Chief Inspector Agnes Ndanu, who is attached to the Matungulu Division Police Headquarters, is accused of pushing her 25-year-old girlfriend, Nicole Omondi, from the sixth floor of an apartment building in Thome Estate.
Kasarani Police Station DCIO Aloyce Mboya confirmed that detectives are actively looking for the officer, adding that her rank will not protect her from facing the law if she is found responsible.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has also been brought into the investigation because the case involves a serving police officer.
Nicole is currently admitted at Kenyatta National Hospital, where she is awaiting critical backbone surgery.
She told investigators that the incident happened after she and Ndanu returned home from a night out.
According to her account, the disagreement started after a man greeted her while they were walking home, making Ndanu suspicious.
Nicole alleged that once they reached the apartment, Ndanu checked her mobile phone, found messages from a male acquaintance, and accused her of cheating.
She further claimed that the officer hit her several times with a glass bottle before dragging her to the balcony and forcing her over the edge.
Crime scene investigators later recovered blood-stained bedding and broken pieces of glass from the apartment, which detectives believe support claims that a violent struggle took place.
Investigators also established that Nicole managed to make a brief distress call to her father during the incident.
When he called back, Ndanu allegedly answered the phone, said she was “disciplining” Nicole, and ended the call.
Doctors at Kenyatta National Hospital said Nicole survived because her fall was partly broken by an iron sheet roof and razor wire.
However, she suffered severe spinal injuries that left her paralysed from the waist down.
Police are urging anyone with information on Ndanu’s whereabouts to report to the Kasarani DCI office or the nearest police station as investigations continue.
