Questions are mounting over the sudden death of Lucky Okoth, a 25-year-old man who had been arrested over the abduction of a 17-year-old girl in Malindi.
Okoth, who was in police custody after allegedly kidnapping the teenager and demanding a Sh200,000 ransom from her family, was reportedly found dead inside his cell on Friday, April 17, 2026.
According to reports by human rights group Vocal Africa, the suspect was discovered hanging under unclear circumstances.
His death has raised eyebrows, with reports indicating that he was alone in the cell at the time, despite the station holding at least 21 other detainees.
The case had drawn widespread attention after the victim, the daughter of a senior prison officer attached to GK Prison Malindi, was rescued in a swift, intelligence-led operation by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
The operation involved personnel from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CR&IB) alongside detectives from Malindi Sub-County.
The teenager had initially been reported missing on April 12, 2026, but the case quickly escalated into a kidnapping after the suspect allegedly contacted the family demanding ransom.
He is said to have issued threats and even allowed the girl to speak to her parent, confirming she was being held against her will.
DCI investigations further revealed that the girl had been communicating with unknown individuals through two mobile phone numbers prior to her disappearance, a lead that proved crucial in narrowing down the suspect.
Using forensic analysis and intelligence tracking, detectives traced Okoth to the Muyeye area within Malindi town, where he was arrested and the victim safely rescued.
Authorities are yet to issue a comprehensive statement regarding the circumstances surrounding his death, even as human rights groups call for an independent investigation.
