Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has successfully conducted a complex six-hour cardiac surgery on a 35-year-old patient suffering from severe heart complications, demonstrating the growing capacity of local hospitals to handle advanced medical procedures.
The operation involved a mitral valve replacement, tricuspid valve repair, and reduction of an enlarged upper heart chamber caused by long-term valve disease.
During the surgery, doctors used a heart-lung machine to maintain blood circulation while the patient’s heart was temporarily stopped, which is standard practice in major cardiac procedures.
The successful operation was made possible through collaboration between KNH specialists and Egyptian cardiac experts, highlighting the importance of international medical partnerships in strengthening healthcare services locally.
