At least two people are dead after police opened fire on protesters in Mbeere North on Tuesday, April 14.
The victims were among a group of young men demonstrating over the shocking state of Ishiara Level 4 Hospital—a facility locals say is a death trap.
The protest started peacefully but turned chaotic in the afternoon. Residents blocked the busy Embu Highway with huge rocks, bringing traffic to a standstill for hours.
Then came the gunfire.
Witnesses say police moved in to disperse the crowd. Protesters fought back. In the chaos, live rounds were fired. Two people did not make it.
“We Are Tired of Dying at Ishiara”
The hospital has been trending for all the wrong reasons. Just days ago, on April 10, local ward reps warned that the facility is collapsing.
Photos going viral on social media tell the story—crumbling walls, roofs barely standing, wards that look abandoned.
For a primary care hospital that serves thousands, locals say enough is enough.
Now, blood is on the tarmac.

MP’s Silence Raises Questions
These killings come just months after Mbeere North elected Leo Wamuthende as their MP.
Wamuthende is a member of the ruling UDA and a close friend of Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.
So far, he has not spoken.
Residents are asking, Where is our MP when we are being shot?
