Security forces in Mandera County successfully repelled a suspected Al-Shabaab attack targeting Sheikhbarrow Border Patrol Unit (BPU) Camp in Lafey Sub-County on Sunday evening.
According to security reports, the militants launched the assault at around 6:45pm using rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) and machine guns in an apparent attempt to overrun the camp.
The heavily armed attackers engaged officers stationed at the facility, triggering an intense exchange of fire that lasted approximately 10 minutes before the assailants retreated.
Authorities confirmed that no casualties or injuries were reported among security personnel during the incident.
Following the failed attack, anti-terror security teams were deployed to conduct clearance and pursuit operations within the surrounding area as investigations continue.
Security agencies suspect the attackers were linked to the Somalia-based Al-Shabaab militant group, which has frequently carried out cross-border attacks in Kenya’s northeastern region.
The latest incident once again highlights the ongoing security threat facing counties bordering Somalia, particularly Mandera, Wajir, and Garissa, where militants often target security installations, communication infrastructure, and public service vehicles.
Residents and organizations operating within Mandera County have been advised to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious activities to security agencies.
Kenyan security forces have in recent years intensified counter-terror operations along the Kenya-Somalia border in efforts to disrupt militant activities and prevent infiltration into the country.
