DCI detectives have conducted a major counter-terrorism operation in Nairobi, leading to the arrest of seven suspects and the recovery of explosives and weapons following intelligence reports of planned attacks targeting shopping malls and government buildings.
According to investigators, the operation was launched after the National Intelligence Service (NIS) received information about suspected terror activities within the city and its outskirts.
In one of the incidents linked to the operation, police arrested 42-year-old John Muiruri along Kenyatta Road in Juja on May 25, 2026, after officers intercepted a suspicious green Nissan X-Trail during a security operation.
A search of the vehicle reportedly uncovered an AK-47 rifle loaded with 12 rounds of ammunition — 11 in the magazine and one in the chamber.
Officers also recovered three additional 7.62mm rounds, two knives, adhesive tape, 56 cable ties, ropes, sacks, and a set of keys believed to be relevant to the ongoing investigations.
Authorities suspect the recovered items may have been intended for use in terror-related activities.
Muiruri is currently being held at Juja Police Station as detectives continue with investigations and pursue possible links to other suspects arrested during the operation.
