Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has claimed that President William Ruto will not retain Deputy President Kithure Kindiki as his running mate in the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during an interview on KTN, Gachagua alleged that Kindiki’s tenure as Deputy President would be short-lived, insisting that President Ruto would eventually replace him ahead of the next polls.
Gachagua, who was removed from office through impeachment before Kindiki took over as Deputy President, said that despite the circumstances surrounding his exit, he does not wish for Kindiki to experience the same ordeal.
“Much as he (Kindiki) snatched my position that I had been given by the people through the election, I would never want him to go through what I went through. It was very dehumanising. I can tell you that he will not be the running mate,” Gachagua said.
Gachagua’s remarks come amid growing political speculation over President Ruto’s re-election strategy ahead of the 2027 General Election.
A section of ODM leaders allied to the broad-based government has proposed that President Ruto should pick his running mate from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) following the party’s cooperation with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
However, President Ruto has not publicly indicated any intention to change his current deputy.
Kindiki was appointed Deputy President following Gachagua’s removal from office through impeachment, a move that significantly reshaped Kenya’s political landscape.
