– A cousin of the late Daily Nation journalist Kitavi Mutua has made shocking revelations about the circumstances surrounding his death after being bitten by a snake, claiming that his family belonged to a religious sect that rejects hospitals and modern medication.
In an emotional post, the cousin identified a group known as “Kavonokya” as the real issue behind Kitavi’s death, arguing that the snake bite alone did not kill him.
According to the cousin, Kitavi had the means and connections to access medical assistance but was allegedly kept at home for three weeks after the snake bite because of the family’s religious convictions.
The cousin claimed that the family only allowed him to be taken to Kitui for treatment three weeks later, when it was reportedly too late for medical intervention to save his life.
The cousin further alleged that the same family had previously lost three children in one day and later lost an aunt to medical conditions that could allegedly have been treated with readily available medication.
He called on the government to investigate religious sects whose teachings put members’ lives at risk, arguing that those responsible should face legal action.
The grieving cousin also questioned why neighbours, friends and local leaders failed to intervene despite the situation, drawing comparisons with the Shakahola tragedy.
“I’m saying goodbye to a brother I shouldn’t be saying goodbye to at this point,” he wrote.
