A tip-off from members of the public has exposed an impersonation and extortion scheme along Jogoo Road, Nairobi, with police arresting a man accused of posing as a police officer to fleece unsuspecting members of the public.
The suspect, Augustine Mjomba Mwadime, was arrested by officers from Jogoo Road Police Station at DC Stage following reports of a suspicious character extorting members of the public while masquerading as a law enforcement officer.
When confronted, the suspect introduced himself as Sergeant Augustine Mjomba Mwadime, claiming to be attached to the GSU Training School in Embakasi.
However, his purported police credentials soon came under scrutiny, and a search exposed what detectives believe was an elaborate attempt to give his fraudulent identity the appearance of legitimate authority.
Recovered from him was a forged certificate of appointment bearing a fake service number, alongside a pair of handcuffs and two keys, which he used to make his impersonation more convincing.
The suspect was taken into custody and is undergoing processing ahead of his arraignment in court.
