Mathioya Constituency residents on Friday night took to the streets after discovering their Member of Parliament, Edwin Mugo, is importing voters after realising he will be voted out by the electorate in the 2027 general election.
The demonstrations began in Kiriaini and continued late into the night as residents gathered outside the National Government Constituency Development Fund offices in Mathioya. Footage from the scene showed residents chanting outside the offices, with bonfires lit along nearby roads and vehicles hooting as the demonstration continued.
Kiriaini boda boda chairman Madocho accused the Tutam MP of facilitating the movement of people into the constituency in an alleged effort to influence his re-election bid.
“He brought them by bus to be registered as voters in this area so that they can vote for him. We want to tell him that we are aware of his scheme. He has not delivered, and we will vote him out,” he said.
Circulating reports alleged that three buses had transported the group, which is said to have included about 500 people from Githurai, to the constituency for the purpose of registering to vote in Mathioya.
Madocho also accused the MP of failing to deliver on his responsibilities and said residents would vote him out if he did not address their concerns.
Protesters further accused Mugo of using constituency development funds to support individuals who do not live in Mathioya. In addition, resident Wainaina raised complaints over bursary funds, alleging that money intended for students at a school in Gitugi had not been remitted.
The MP has not yet responded to the allegations, but the protests highlight growing discontent among voters in the constituency. With the 2027 elections approaching, Mathioya residents have made it clear that they will not tolerate what they perceive as electoral manipulation and neglect of their development needs.
