Former Deputy President and DCP party leader Rigathi Gachagua has slammed President William Ruto over his overseas travel, accusing him of using an extremely expensive private jet while Kenyans continue to struggle with rising fuel prices and harsh economic conditions.
Speaking from the United Kingdom, Gachagua questioned the President’s decision to leave the country despite reports that authorities had been warned about growing public anger and possible unrest over the high cost of living.
“When the country is burning, despite having been properly briefed that there is a problem and Kenya will come to a standstill, he left on an overseas trip in a private jet,” Gachagua said.
The former Deputy President further alleged that the aircraft being used by President Ruto is among the most luxurious in the world and costs taxpayers about KSh 5 million per hour.
“I am told the most luxurious in the world, where you are paying KSh 5 million per hour,” he claimed.
President Ruto departed the country for Azerbaijan aboard a chartered luxury private jet on Saturday to attend the 13th session of the World Urban Forum.
During the event, Kenya was reportedly recognized for its efforts and achievements in affordable housing and sustainable urban development.
However, Gachagua’s remarks come against the backdrop of nationwide frustration over the rising cost of fuel, which triggered protests on Monday in several parts of the country.
The demonstrations led to destruction of property and violent confrontations with police, further fueling debate over government spending and priorities during tough economic times.
