Kenya’s High Commissioner to India, Ambassador Peter Munyiri, has joined the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) and declared his intention to vie for the Nyeri gubernatorial seat in the 2027 General Election.
Munyiri announced his political ambitions after meeting DCP leader and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua at his Wamunyoro residence on Wednesday, October 21.
In a statement following the meeting, Gachagua said the economist had informed him of his decision to return to Kenya and serve the people of Nyeri County as their fifth governor.
“Economist Peter Munyiri has served as Kenya’s Ambassador to India and has informed me of his decision to return home to serve the people of Nyeri County as its 5th Governor,” Gachagua stated.
He welcomed Munyiri to DCP and said he would contest the gubernatorial seat on the party ticket, assuring him of a free and fair nomination process ahead of the 2027 polls.
Gachagua also urged the aspiring governor to popularise himself on the ground ahead of the party primaries scheduled for late March 2027.
“I have welcomed him to the party, assured him of free and fair nominations, and encouraged him to popularise himself on the ground in preparation for the party primaries to be held in late March next year. The future is Green,” Gachagua stated.
Munyiri’s entry into the race comes as political aspirants begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election, in what could shape the contest for Nyeri County’s top seat.
President William Ruto nominated Munyiri for appointment as Kenya’s High Commissioner to India in October 2023.
Parliament approved his appointment in November that year, and he presented his credentials to Indian President Droupadi Murmu in March 2024.
