Kenya’s Passport Rises Five Places, Now 68th Globally in Latest Henley Index

Kenyan citizens can now enjoy slightly more travel freedom after the Kenyan passport climbed five places in the latest Henley Passport Index, moving up to 68th globally.

The improvement follows a recent dip in October 2025, when the passport ranked 73rd, allowing visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to just 70 countries.

In the 2026 update, Kenyan passport holders can now visit 69 destinations without needing a visa beforehand, marking a modest but notable recovery.

The Henley Passport Index, which ranks passports according to global travel freedom, uses exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and evaluates 199 passports against 227 international destinations.

Rankings are updated monthly to account for changes in visa policies, diplomatic relations, and international agreements.

Over the past two decades, Kenya’s passport ranking has seen significant fluctuations—peaking in the mid-50s in the early 2000s before dropping to a historic low of 77th in 2021.

The current rise places Kenya among Africa’s top 10 strongest passports, trailing only Seychelles, Mauritius, and South Africa.

Analysts describe the incremental improvement as a positive sign for Kenya’s international standing, with potential benefits for trade, tourism, and citizen mobility.
