Maara Member of Parliament Kareke Mbiuki has come under intense public criticism after being captured on video pushing a disabled girl who had attended a function within his constituency.
Mbiuki, who is among the United Democratic Alliance lieutenants actively campaigning for President William Ruto’s re-election, was seen on camera pushing away a young girl who had approached him to give him a hug. In the embarrassing and deeply shameful footage, the lawmaker shoved the girl, causing her to fall to the ground, a moment that left residents visibly shocked and prompted some of them to rush in and help her up.
What made the incident even more troubling was Mbiuki’s reaction. With the microphone still in his hand, the MP continued with his speech as though nothing out of the ordinary had happened, showing little to no concern for the girl he had just pushed to the ground.
The incident has reignited criticism of UDA leaders in the Mt. Kenya region, who have been notably loud and aggressive in their campaign efforts for Ruto, fuelled by generous funding from State House. Many residents have openly questioned the sincerity of these campaigns, noting that selling Ruto’s candidacy in a region that has grown increasingly hostile to him feels like an uphill and almost impossible task, much like trying to sell pork in a Saudi Arabian mosque.
