Nyandarua County Criminal Investigations Officer John Rioba lost his life on the spot following a horrific multi-vehicle crash at Karai along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway on Monday afternoon.
The accident also left Uasin Gishu MCA Regina Chumba injured.
She reportedly sustained chest injuries and was rushed to hospital for treatment.
According to witnesses, the tragedy unfolded when a truck travelling towards Nakuru allegedly developed brake failure.
The driver lost control of the heavy commercial vehicle, which rammed into other motorists, triggering a chain-reaction collision involving nine vehicles.
The crash caused massive traffic disruption along the busy highway as emergency responders, police officers, and members of the public rushed to rescue victims trapped inside the wreckage and clear debris from the road.
Photos from the scene showed extensively damaged vehicles, some overturned, with debris scattered across the carriageway as rescue efforts continued.
Rioba, a senior officer in the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), was among those who died instantly in the crash.
The condition of MCA Regina Chumba was not immediately disclosed, although reports indicated that she was receiving medical attention.
Several other victims sustained serious injuries and were taken to nearby health facilities for treatment.
The Nairobi-Nakuru Highway is one of Kenya’s busiest transport corridors, serving as a key link between Nairobi, the Rift Valley, and western Kenya.
The route carries thousands of passenger and commercial vehicles daily.
Police have launched investigations to establish the exact cause of the accident and determine whether mechanical failure or other factors contributed to the deadly crash.
