One of President William Ruto’s closest confidants, Molo Member of Parliament Kuria Kimani, has issued a chilling warning to Kenya’s youth over their planned demonstrations on June 25th, 2026.
Gen Zs across the country have been mobilising to shut down the nation on Thursday to mark the second anniversary of the June 2024 protests, during which a number of their colleagues were killed by security forces. The youth, buoyed by support from united opposition leaders, have vowed to make the country ungovernable on that day and to ensure their fallen colleagues are never forgotten.
President William Ruto and top security officials have already gone on record warning demonstrators that they will be met with brutal force if they attempt to take to the streets. Kimani has now added his own voice to those threats, and his language has been far from measured.
In a video that has since circulated widely, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) legislator warned the youth that they will be sliced with pangas if they proceed with their plans to shut down the country. He also reminded demonstrators that, unlike in previous protests, they will not be allowed to destroy businesses, homes, or key national infrastructure, warning that the response this time around will be swift and severe.
The remarks by Kimani have drawn sharp condemnation from Kenyans who view them as an open incitement to violence against citizens who are constitutionally entitled to demonstrate peacefully. For many, the statement is not the warning of a responsible legislator but the threat of a man shielded by power and unbothered by accountability.
