Nation Media Group, once one of the most celebrated news houses in Eastern Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa, is now a shadow of its former self after being acquired by a Tanzanian businessman identified as Rostam Aziz.
Rostam Aziz has completed the acquisition of a controlling 54.08% stake in Nation Media Group (NMG) through his firm, Taarifa Ltd.
The controversial takeover by a Tanzanian has lowered the dignity of the media house, which has now lost the trust of Kenyans since it has become a government mouthpiece instead of the voice of the voiceless.
To suit its agenda of drumming up support for the current Kenyan government, the top management of NMG carried out a reshuffle in which bright journalists were transferred to remote postings like Uganda, while pro-government journalists were placed in the main editorial and publishing “kitchen.”
The aim is to help the current government, which has irredeemably lost favor with Kenyans since the June 2024 protests, in which hundreds of youths were killed and thousands abducted under President William Ruto’s regime.
Here is how NMG reorganized its editorial team to keep the current government happy, the way Kenya Broadcasting Corporation(KBC) used to do during the Nyayo era.
