Democracy for Citizens Party(DCP) has moved swiftly to pour cold water on Kiharu Member of Parliament Ndindi Nyoro’s dramatic political repositioning, dismissing his newly announced People’s Party of Kenya as nothing more than a State House sponsored project designed to fragment the Mt Kenya vote ahead of the 2027 general election.
Nyoro made his move on Monday evening, addressing a gathering at Safari Park Hotel where he announced that he had formally parted ways with President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance(UDA) and thrown his weight behind the People’s Party of Kenya.
He went further, declaring that his new party would work alongside the opposition to ensure Ruto is denied a second term in 2027, a statement that drew applause from those present but immediate scepticism from DCP.
Speaking through its Secretary General John Methu, DCP wasted little time in tearing into Nyoro’s new political venture, arguing that the People’s Party of Kenya is cut from the same cloth as UDA and serves the same master in State House.
According to DCP, the People’s Party of Kenya was bankrolled by State House to the tune of Sh86 million, making the entire exercise not a genuine opposition play but a carefully choreographed distraction aimed at dividing the Mt Kenya electorate that has decisively turned its back on Ruto.
“Whether his team initially presented a Sh72 million budget to the Head of Public Service for the launch of his presidential bid, which was subsequently revised upwards to Sh86 million,” DCP said, throwing down the gauntlet and daring Nyoro to confirm or deny the explosive claims.
The Gachagua-led party also argued that the People’s Party of Kenya was specifically created to provide a soft landing for UDA legislators from the Mt Kenya region who have already been rejected by their own constituents and are desperately looking for a new political vehicle to board ahead of 2027, knowing full well that the UDA brand is now toxic in the region.
In the eyes of DCP, Nyoro has not left Ruto’s orbit. He has simply been handed a new wheelbarrow and told to push it in a different direction.
