President William Ruto has revealed that he held discussions with OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman on the sidelines of the G7 Leaders’ Summit, focusing on opportunities to deepen collaboration in artificial intelligence and digital transformation.
In a statement shared on his X account, Ruto said the talks explored the possibility of establishing Nairobi as the home of the first OpenAI Academy initiative in Eastern Africa, a move that could significantly boost AI education and innovation in the region.
According to the President, the proposed collaboration would focus on expanding access to artificial intelligence education, strengthening digital skills among young people, supporting educators and learners, and positioning Kenya as a leading center for AI talent and technological innovation.
“We explored potential collaboration through establishing Nairobi as the home of the first OpenAI Academy initiative in Eastern Africa, expanding AI education, strengthening digital skills, supporting educators and learners, and reinforcing Kenya’s position as a leading hub for AI talent and innovation,” Ruto said.
The Head of State emphasized the need for Kenya and Africa at large to embrace emerging technologies in order to unlock new opportunities for economic growth and youth empowerment.
“I underscored the importance of harnessing emerging technologies to create opportunities for young people, drive innovation and ensure Africa plays a meaningful role in shaping the future digital economy,” he added.
