Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has announced himself as a serious force in Kenya’s 2027 presidential race after his newly adopted political vehicle, The Equitable Party, attracted over 1.3 million registered members in less than 24 hours of its official launch, a figure that has left political analysts and rival camps scrambling to reassess the electoral landscape ahead of next year’s general election.
By Monday noon, barely a day after Sifuna was unveiled as the party’s leader and presidential candidate at a function in Nairobi on Sunday, October 4th, 2026, the registration numbers had already surpassed what most new political parties take months or even years to achieve.
Political pundits are now estimating that The Equitable Party could hit 10 million members within a single month, a trajectory that would make it not only the largest party in Kenya but potentially the largest political party in Eastern and Southern Africa.
The Equitable Party was originally registered in 2022 and is now being restructured from the ground up to accommodate Sifuna, his political allies and the vast and energetic network of supporters he has built through the Linda Mwananchi Movement over the past year.
That movement gave Sifuna his national platform, connected him with a new generation of politically conscious Kenyans and built the groundswell of support that Sunday’s launch was designed to formalise and channel into a credible presidential campaign.
For months, the one outstanding question hanging over Sifuna’s rising ambitions was a simple but critical one. Which party would carry the Linda Mwananchi momentum into the ballot box in 2027? Sunday answered that question emphatically. The Equitable Party is that vehicle, and the 1.3 million Kenyans who registered within the first 24 hours have made clear they intend to ride it all the way to August 2027.
Sifuna enters the presidential race at a moment when public disillusionment with the current administration is at its highest, the youth vote is energised and looking for a candidate they can own, and the opposition field remains fluid enough for a fast-rising new entrant to make a defining impact. Whether The Equitable Party can sustain the energy of its extraordinary launch and convert it into electoral results on voting day is the question that will define the next chapter of Sifuna’s political story.
