United States President Donald Trump has reportedly received a top-secret intelligence briefing warning that Nigerian President Bola Tinubu is gravely ill and that his death before the 2027 presidential election could trigger a devastating power struggle and violent unrest in Africa’s most populous nation.
Mike Arnold, a former mayor of Blanco, Texas, and founder of Africa Arise International, prepared the briefing and said he submitted it to a senior adviser on international security matters. According to Arnold, the adviser routinely circulates such briefings to the White House, the US State Department, the Defence Intelligence Agency and other key government offices, meaning the contents of this particular document have potentially landed on the desks of some of the most powerful decision-makers in Washington.

The intelligence document points to a series of developments surrounding Tinubu that Arnold argues paint a troubling picture of a leader in declining health. Among the observations cited are a recent three-week foreign trip that was extended twice, Tinubu’s absence from the United Nations General Assembly for the third consecutive year, a visibly limp left arm, difficulty maintaining his balance while on his feet and questions raised over the editing of an official broadcast involving the Nigerian president.
The most alarming section of the briefing focuses on the political consequences of a worst-case scenario. Arnold warned Washington that if Tinubu dies before Nigeria’s January 16th, 2027 presidential election, the country could face an immediate and chaotic scramble for control of the government, with the very real possibility of violent resistance breaking out as competing factions fight to fill the vacuum left by his absence.
Arnold urged the Trump administration to pay significantly closer attention to the political and security implications of any sudden change in Nigerian leadership, arguing that the ripple effects of instability in Nigeria would be felt far beyond West Africa.
It is important to note, however, that the allegations regarding Tinubu’s medical condition have not been independently verified by any medical report or authoritative clinical source.
Nigerian officials have repeatedly and firmly rejected claims that the President is incapacitated, and Tinubu’s camp has pushed back against what it describes as politically motivated speculation about his health.
What is clear is that the fact that such a briefing has been prepared, submitted, and reportedly circulated at the highest levels of the US government is itself a significant development, one that Nigeria’s government will find very difficult to simply wave away.
