President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party has wasted no time in unleashing state sponsored violence in Ol Kalou constituency ahead of the July 16th by-election, with shocking footage emerging of goons brutally attacking Democracy for Citizens Party supporters who had gathered at a hotel in the area.
The by-election is a straight fight between UDA candidate Samuel Muchina and DCP candidate Samuel Kamau Ngotho, following the death of Ol Kalou MP David Kiaraho earlier this year.
With UDA reportedly losing ground to the DCP candidate, the state machinery has shifted gear from campaigning to intimidation, deploying goons to terrorise opposition supporters and suppress the democratic process.
On Wednesday evening, DCP supporters who had gathered for a meeting at Royal Gardens Hotel in Ol Kalou were set upon by state-sponsored goons who attacked and beat them mercilessly, sending women and youth scrambling for safety inside the hotel premises.
DCP party leader Rigathi Gachagua moved swiftly to name and shame those behind the attack, pointing his finger directly at Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and accusing him of dispatching the notorious Nairobi Sierra killer squad to cause mayhem in Ol Kalou.
The brazen nature of the assault, carried out in a hotel in broad view of witnesses, reflects the desperation of a ruling party that appears willing to use any means necessary to hold onto a constituency it knows it is losing.
“Mr Kipchumba Murkomen has dispatched the Nairobi Sierra killer squad that attacked Witima ACK church to cause mayhem in Ol Kalou. They arrived three hours ago and started abductions and indiscriminate beatings on DCP campaigners. Our teams are held up at Royal Garden Hotel under brutal police and state-sponsored militia. Goons are currently breaking into the hotel. Thank you Ol Kalou people for resisting this killer squad,” Gachagua wrote on X in the immediate aftermath of the attack.
