Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir has sparked debate online after he was spotted wearing a luxury watch valued at approximately Ksh 2.3 million during a recent development tour in Wajir County.
Chirchir, who is regarded as one of President William Ruto’s close allies, drew attention after a social media user identified the high-end timepiece on his wrist as a Hublot Classic Fusion watch.
According to listings on the official Hublot website, the designer watch retails at around $18,800, translating to roughly Ksh 2.3 million.
Photos of the CS wearing the expensive accessory quickly circulated online, with many Kenyans reacting to the display of wealth amid the country’s ongoing economic challenges and rising cost of living.
Some social media users questioned whether senior government officials should publicly showcase luxury items at a time when many citizens are struggling financially, while others defended Chirchir, arguing that public servants are entitled to spend their earnings as they wish.
The incident has once again reignited conversations around the lavish lifestyles of some top government officials allied to President Ruto, several of whom have recently faced scrutiny over displays of wealth on social media and at public events.
The debate comes as Kenyans continue to express concerns over taxation, fuel prices, and the overall cost of living.
