Kileleshwa Ward MCA Robert Alai, a known National Intelligence Service (NIS) operative, has claimed that the late former Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Francis Ogolla, was killed for attempting to overthrow President William Ruto.
On April 18, 2024, Ogolla and nine others went down in a helicopter crash in the deep terrain of Elgeyo Marakwet County. Only one person survived. According to sources, the target was Ogolla; the others were collateral damage.
A government report released in 2025 stated that Ogolla’s aircraft crash was due to an engine malfunction, officially ruling out any assassination plot.
But on Monday, during the Madaraka Day celebrations, Alai doubled down, claiming that Ogolla was, in fact, terminated. Alai went further, stating that it was former CDF General Robert Kibochi who briefed the President that Ogolla was actively planning to overthrow him.
Ogolla was killed two months before the June 25, 2024, protests—the same protests that shocked President William Ruto to his core after youthful demonstrators stormed and set fire to Parliament. During those protests, over 100 people were killed by police, and thousands more were injured.
Sources have since alleged that Ogolla had planned to execute a coup on June 25, 2024, but intelligence assets were ahead of him, and they scrubbed the mission early
