Two suspects have been arrested in Machakos County after they were caught illegally discharging human waste into a nearby river, in an incident that has raised serious public health and environmental concerns.
Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti confirmed that the arrests were carried out by the county’s Inspectorate Enforcement Team during an operation in the Maruba Dam area.
According to the Governor, officers impounded and towed a waste-exhauster truck that was found dumping human waste into the Mwania River, which feeds into the dam.
The driver and co-driver of the truck were arrested on the spot and are expected to face charges related to the unlawful disposal of human waste into a water body.
Governor Ndeti condemned the incident, describing it as reckless and a direct threat to both public health and the environment.
“Such reckless action poses a serious threat to public health, contaminates our water sources, and degrades the environment,” she said.
She reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to protecting natural resources and enforcing environmental regulations across the county.
The Governor also urged residents, businesses, and waste management operators to adhere to proper disposal procedures to safeguard water sources and protect communities.
