Kenyans Blame Ruto Over Fake Alcohol Circulation In Mt Kenya And Nairobi

Kenyans on social media have turned their anger on President William Ruto’s administration over the alarming rise of counterfeit alcohol circulating freely across the country, particularly in the Mt Kenya region and Nairobi, where the problem has reached levels that health experts are now describing as a full-blown public health emergency.

For the past one month, harrowing stories have been flooding social media platforms as Kenyans share their personal experiences of buying popular alcohol brands at local entertainment joints, only to end up hospitalised the following day with severe reactions that have left some fighting for their lives. The frequency and consistency of these accounts paint a picture of a counterfeit alcohol supply chain that is deeply embedded in the market and operating with little to no interference from government regulators.

Kenyatta National Hospital has raised the alarm over a sharp rise in alcohol related admissions, with cases of liver and kidney damage increasing at a rate that has stretched the facility’s capacity and alarmed medical professionals. Health experts have added their voices to the growing chorus of concern, warning that the proliferation of fake alcohol poses a catastrophic danger to the current generation of young Kenyans who are its primary victims.

On X, one user identified as Olivia Pope described drinking a well-known alcohol brand at a Nairobi entertainment joint, only to spend the next two days vomiting. She placed the blame squarely on the President.

“I just know Ruto has something to do with all this fake alcohol in circulation,” Olivia Pope wrote, a sentiment that resonated widely and attracted thousands of responses from Kenyans sharing similar experiences.

The conspiracy theories have gone further still. Some Kenyans have drawn a direct line between the surge in fake alcohol and the 2027 presidential election, arguing that the government is deliberately allowing cartels to flood the market with poisonous beverages as a covert strategy to eliminate as many opposition-leaning youths as possible before election day. While that claim remains unverified, its consistent repetition across multiple platforms reflects the depth of public distrust in the current administration.

What is not a theory is this. The government has remained completely silent on an issue that is sending Kenyans to hospital in growing numbers every single day. In the absence of any regulatory crackdown, any public health directive or any acknowledgement from those in power that a problem even exists, ordinary Kenyans are left to take their chances every time they order a drink.
