Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has raised fresh concerns over the conduct of recent by-elections, alleging that security operations in some regions were influenced by political interests.
Speaking on Wednesday during an interview on KTN, Gachagua said that even in areas where his political camp recorded victories, the electoral process was not free of irregularities.
He singled out Narok, claiming that the election there proceeded only because residents were determined to vote despite intimidation.
Gachagua alleged that the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) in Narok was reportedly pressured by a senior official in the national police leadership to cede command of security operations to Murang’a Woman Representative Betty Maina.
He said the OCS declined the request and was abruptly transferred to Turkana on November 24, just two days before the by-election.
He further claimed that the Woman Rep subsequently took over the security operation, leading to what he described as harassment and intimidation of Narok Town residents.
Despite the challenges, Gachagua praised the “civic courage” of Narok voters and insisted that Kenyans would not tolerate such intimidation during the 2027 general election.
“While it may be possible to intimidate people during a by-election, it will not be possible during a general election,” he said.
