United Democratic Alliance Members of Parliament from the Mt Kenya region have warned former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua against castigating Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro after he joined the People’s Party of Kenya and became its party leader.
Last week, Nyoro, who is a known fence-sitter, announced that he had joined PPK and declared that he will unite with opposition leaders to send President William Ruto home in the 2027 presidential election. However, just after his announcement, Gachagua termed Nyoro’s party as ‘Ruto’s wheelbarrow’ aimed at dividing the Mt Kenya region, a claim that Nyoro has denied.
But in his defence, MPs led by Kimani Ichung’wah of Kikuyu, Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi and Nyandarua Woman Representative Faith Gitau came out guns blazing, attacking Gachagua for attacking Ndindi Nyoro.
The trio said they support Ndindi Nyoro’s move to join a new party and said they are also considering ditching UDA to join PPK, which will compete with Gachagua’s Democracy For Citizens Party(DCP) in Mount Kenya.
The lawmakers’ move to defend Ndindi Nyoro may now cement assertions by Gachagua that Ndindi Nyoro is President William Ruto’s mole in the opposition and that he aims to divide the opposition and also to fragment the popular Mount Kenya vote bloc.
With the Mt Kenya region heading to the opposition, Ruto sees this as a threat to his re-election in 2027, and Nyoro may be one of the state stooges planted to divide the vote-rich hamlet.
The political realignments in the region are becoming more complex as the 2027 elections draw nearer. Gachagua has been working tirelessly to consolidate the Mt Kenya vote behind his DCP party, while Ruto’s allies are attempting to counter this by backing alternative parties like PPK. The outcome of this battle for the region’s loyalty will be crucial in determining the next president.
