Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has dropped yet another explosive bombshell, claiming that Kikuyu Member of Parliament Kimani Ichung’wa purchased a Sh200 million house in the upmarket Karen suburb of Nairobi and handed it to Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission(IEBC) chairman Edung Ethekon as a bribe to rig the 2027 presidential election in favour of President William Ruto.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday as he prepared to depart for the United States, Gachagua painted a deeply alarming picture of an electoral commission that has already been captured by the ruling establishment long before a single ballot has been printed.
“The IEBC under its chairman is currently compromised. They have been told to rig the election in favour of Ruto because he has no numbers for re-election,” Gachagua declared, challenging Ichung’wa to publicly deny the Karen house allegation if he had the courage to do so.
But the bribery claim was only the beginning. Gachagua also raised serious red flags over the IEBC’s decision to award the tender for printing the 2027 election ballots to a South Korean firm known as MIRA, a company he described as notorious for facilitating election rigging across multiple countries. He cited the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Philippines, Argentina and Iraq as examples of elections where MIRA’s involvement had been associated with controversy and manipulation.
The DCP leader went further, alleging that MIRA officials had already held secret meetings with Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo and PS Belio Kipsang, during which they were reportedly briefed on exactly how to tilt the electoral outcome in Ruto’s favour. According to Gachagua, the scheme is being driven by the reality that Ruto has haemorrhaged support across the country and simply does not have the genuine numbers to win a free and fair election.
Gachagua concluded by calling on the IEBC to abandon MIRA and instead use the same ballot printing company that handled the Ol Kalou by-election, pointing to that contest as evidence that a credible printing process can be achieved when the ruling party is not allowed to manipulate the system from behind the scenes.
The question he left hanging in the air as he boarded his flight to America was direct and deliberately provocative. Can Kimani Ichung’wa look Kenyans in the eye and deny that he bought Ethekon a Sh200 million house in Karen? The country is waiting for an answer.
