Are you tired of seeing “Not qualified” on job applications in Kenya? Germany is currently the number one country in Europe actively looking for foreign workers. With over 700,000 open vacancies, they are literally paying people to come and work. Here is exactly how to get a sponsored job in Germany this year.

Why Germany is the Best Option Right Now

Germany is facing a massive shortage of skilled workers. Unlike the UK or USA, Germany has changed its laws to make it much easier for foreigners to get jobs. The introduction of the “Chancenkarte” (Opportunity Card) means that even if you don’t have a job offer yet, you can get a visa to go there and look for one.

The most important thing to know: German employers are desperate to hire. They will pay for your visa, your flight, and your relocation. You need to know exactly where to look.

For a complete overview of all countries, read our Ultimate Guide to Jobs Abroad.

The 4 Best Websites to Find Jobs in Germany

If you want to work in Germany, you have to stop using LinkedIn and JobWeb Kenya. You need to use the actual job boards German companies use.

Here are the top 4 you must check every single day:

  1. Make-it-in-Germany (make-it-in-germany.com) – This is the official German government website. It has a specific search filter for “Visa Sponsorship.” Use it first.
  2. Arbeitnow (arbeitnow.com) – This is a highly focused job board that strictly lists jobs where employers provide visa sponsorship. You will find IT, Engineering, and Logistics jobs here.
  3. StepStone (stepstone.de) – This is the biggest German job board. Use Google Translate to read the German job descriptions, but you can apply in English if the job posting allows it.
  4. EURES (eures.europa.eu) – This is the European Union’s official job mobility portal. It lists jobs that are specifically open to non-EU workers.

The 3 In-Demand Industries for Kenyans

You don’t need a PhD to work in Germany. Here are the top sectors where Kenyans are being hired right now:

1. Nursing and Healthcare

This is the fastest and easiest route into Germany. Germany has a catastrophic shortage of nurses. Hospitals and care homes are actively recruiting nurses from Kenya.
How to do it: You need a nursing diploma or degree from Kenya. You will need to have your academic papers recognized in Germany, and you will need a B1 (or B2) level of German. Many agencies will handle your paperwork.

2. IT and Software Development

If you are a software developer, web developer, or data analyst, Germany is your goldmine. Many tech companies in Berlin and Munich speak English exclusively.
How to do it: Show them your GitHub profile, your portfolio, and prove you can code. If you have 3+ years of experience, you can easily get a job with €50,000+ salary.

3. Engineering and Manufacturing

Germany is the engineering capital of the world. Mechanical engineers, electricians, and truck drivers are in high demand.
How to do it: Have your degree or trade certificate evaluated by the official German agency (ZAB). If you are a skilled technician, you can easily secure a contract.

“If you are looking for similar opportunities in a country that speaks English, check out our guide to Jobs in Canada.“

What is the Salary Like?

The German minimum wage is currently around €12.41 per hour (roughly Ksh 1,800 per hour). However, a professional job will usually pay much more.

  • Nurses: €2,800 to €3,500 per month (Ksh 400k – 500k).
  • IT Developers: €4,000 to €6,000 per month (Ksh 600k – 900k).
  • Engineers: €3,500 to €5,000 per month (Ksh 500k – 700k).

How to Apply (The Step-by-Step Process)

  1. Polish your CV to German Standards: A German CV must include your photo, your date of birth, and your nationality. It looks different from a Kenyan CV.
  2. Create a German Email Address: Use Gmail or Outlook, but include your name and a professional setting.
  3. Apply on the 4 boards above. Do not apply to just 5 jobs. Apply to 50 jobs.
  4. Get the Visa: Once you get your contract, apply for the National Visa (Type D) at the German Embassy in Nairobi.
  5. Fly to Germany.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: Do I need to speak German to work in Germany?
A: For IT jobs in Berlin or Munich, often not. For Nursing or Medicine, yes, you must have a B1 level of German.

Q: How long does the visa process take?
A: Between 1 and 4 months, depending on how prepared your paperwork is.
