The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has been accused of laxity in handling investigations into the abduction of Standard Media Group Associate Editor Alex Kiprotich.

According to Standard Group Head of Security Tom Kipyegon, the DCI is yet to dispatch a team of detectives to lift fingerprints from Kiprotich’s vehicle, raising concerns that crucial evidence could be lost.

The vehicle has been secured at the Standard Group headquarters along Mombasa Road, where it is awaiting forensic examination by detectives.

Kipyegon said fingerprints from the vehicle could provide crucial leads as investigators seek to establish what happened during Kiprotich’s abduction and identify those behind the incident.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja had reportedly promised to dispatch a team to examine the vehicle.

However, according to Kipyegon, the promise has yet to be honoured, despite the importance of the forensic evidence.

The delay has raised concerns that crucial evidence could deteriorate or become difficult to recover, potentially hampering efforts to establish what transpired and identify those responsible.

“They know very well this evidence is key and after a while, the fingerprints may fade away,” Kipyegon said.

Kiprotich was reportedly abducted by four armed and masked men along the Gilgil–Nakuru highway on Tuesday night, September 1, 2026.

He was found approximately nine hours later after allegedly being dumped near Masinga Dam in Machakos County.

The Standard Media Group editor was reportedly visibly shaken and had sustained minor injuries when he was found.

Questions are now being raised over the pace of the investigation, particularly the delay in examining his vehicle for possible forensic evidence.
