Laikipia East Member of Parliament Mwangi Kiunjuri has issued a pointed and very public ultimatum to President William Ruto, threatening to withdraw his support for the Kenya Kwanza administration entirely if Deputy President Kithure Kindiki is dropped as Ruto’s running mate ahead of the 2027 general election.
Speaking during an interview on Inooro FM on Tuesday, Kiunjuri, who also leads The Service Party(TSP), warned that any attempt to remove Kindiki from the 2027 ticket would carry serious and far-reaching political consequences for Ruto, particularly in the vote-rich Mt Kenya region where the President can least afford to lose any more ground.
The Laikipia East legislator made clear that he would not be a passive observer if the Deputy President position were taken away from the mountain.
“If they try to touch the position of Kithure Kindiki, I will do away with them. If the slot of Deputy President will not be from Mt Kenya, I will not support the Kenya Kwanza administration,” Kiunjuri said, in remarks that were as direct as they were unambiguous.
He went further, arguing that Mt Kenya played a decisive and indispensable role in delivering Ruto’s 2022 presidential victory and that the region must now be firm and strategic about what it demands in return ahead of 2027. According to Kiunjuri, the Deputy President position is the bare minimum the region should be insisting on and must be treated as non-negotiable in any political discussions or coalition arrangements being considered by the ruling side.
“We must know what belongs to Mt Kenya ahead of 2027. Already, the opposition is negotiating, and thus we should also set a bare minimum, but the slot of Deputy President is not negotiable,” he said.
Kiunjuri’s remarks reflect a growing anxiety within Mt Kenya political circles about the region’s leverage and direction as 2027 draws closer.
With a significant portion of the mountain already having shifted its allegiance to the united opposition led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, those still aligned with the government know they need something concrete to show their constituents, and retaining the Deputy President slot is the most visible prize available.
