United Democratic Alliance(UDA) Secretary General Hassan Omar has sent shockwaves across the country after declaring that even dead voters will cast their ballots for President William Ruto in the 2027 presidential election, a statement that has been widely interpreted as a chilling admission that the ruling party is already plotting to rig the next general election.
Omar, one of Ruto’s closest and most trusted confidants, made the controversial remarks on Friday in what many political observers are reading not as a figure of speech but as a deliberate signal that UDA intends to manipulate the voter register by retaining dead people on the roll and using those ghost entries to manufacture votes for the President.
The statement could not have come at a more telling time. Ruto’s support across the country has collapsed at a rate that has alarmed even his own allies. The killing of young people during the 2024 protests, the systematic destruction of the economy through punishing taxation, runaway corruption and political patronage have all taken a devastating toll on his public standing. His chances of securing a second term are growing slimmer with each passing month, and the panic within the ruling establishment is becoming increasingly difficult to conceal.
That panic appears to have driven Omar’s reckless Friday declaration. When a party’s Secretary General publicly announces that dead people will vote for your candidate, it is not a boast of popularity. It is a confession of desperation. It is the language of a political machine that has accepted it cannot win on merit and is already signalling its willingness to steal what it cannot earn at the ballot box.
Including deceased individuals in the voter register and using those entries to generate fraudulent votes is not just unconstitutional. It is a criminal act that strikes at the very foundation of Kenya’s democratic process. That the man entrusted with running the country’s ruling party is openly hinting at such a scheme, on camera, speaks volumes about the contempt the UDA leadership has for the Kenyan voter and the rule of law.
For Kenyans who remember the painful elections of the past, Omar’s words are not just alarming. They are a warning we must take seriously before it is too late.
