Wiper Patriotic Front party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has begun displaying his familiar tendency to hedge his bets, after he was reportedly spotted in a secret meeting with President William Ruto’s ally and former Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama.
Kalonzo is a member of the united opposition coalition, whose leaders have repeatedly pledged to remain together and field a single presidential candidate to face incumbent President William Ruto in the August 10, 2027 presidential election.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has said publicly that one of the opposition leaders would abandon the united front and instead align with President William Ruto’s camp.
Gachagua’s prediction appears to be coming true, after Kalonzo reportedly met Muthama on Thursday at an undisclosed hotel in Nairobi or Machakos County.
The meeting was confirmed by Muthama himself, who said he had held advanced discussions with Kalonzo Musyoka ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
“After a lot of exaggerated stories, I would like to clarify that yesterday evening, I had a consultation with my brother and longtime political friend Wiper Democratic Front leader @skmusyoka on a range of national issues, including matters that touch on the lives and well-being of our people. Our conversation provided an opportunity to exchange views, reflect on the current national situation, and consider the way forward on issues of importance to our nation and our people,” Muthama wrote on his official X page.
