President William Ruto has been left with egg on his face after he paid crowds to listen to him in Murang’a County on Friday and Saturday.

The crowds were hired at a cost of between Sh 1,000 and Sh 2,000 each and were issued United Democratic Alliance T-shirts and yellow caps branded UDA.

The Head of State visited Kandara, Kiharu, and Murang’a Town, where he was received by the hired crowds in huge numbers. In fact, youths were reportedly bused in from as far as Dandora and Kayole in Nairobi just to fill the grounds.

Ruto hired the crowds to create the optics that he is still loved in the Mt. Kenya region—despite having betrayed them.

However, after the meeting ended, thousands of youths gathered in Murang’a Town and burned all the campaign merchandise they had been issued, chanting “Wantam” loudly into the night.

“Wantam” is a slogan associated with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, aimed at ensuring that President William Ruto serves only one term, with his exit coming at next year’s general election.

Below is the video of the hired crowds burning their UDA merchandise and chanting Wantam.
