The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has issued a warning to drivers transporting newly imported transit vehicles, urging heightened vigilance following a rise in robbery with violence incidents along major highways.
In the latest incident reported on May 6, 2026, a driver ferrying a Subaru Impreza from Mombasa to Kampala was ambushed near the Mutomo area in Mtito Andei in what investigators believe was a well-planned operation.
According to the DCI, the attackers used a motorcycle with two pillion passengers to block the vehicle’s path. The suspects allegedly posed as stranded road users, with one pretending to be disabled and walking on crutches.
The driver reportedly stopped to assist, but the situation quickly turned violent. One of the assailants brandished a firearm and attempted to hijack the vehicle, leading to a struggle inside the car.
During the scuffle, the firearm accidentally discharged, fatally injuring one of the suspects who had posed as a disabled person. The remaining attackers escaped the scene on a motorcycle.
Police officers responded swiftly to the incident. The driver was rushed to Kambu Hospital for treatment and later discharged in stable condition.
The body of the deceased suspect was moved to the Kambu Hospital Mortuary, while detectives launched investigations to track down the fleeing accomplices.
Authorities say the incident highlights a growing trend where criminals disguise themselves as stranded or vulnerable road users to lure unsuspecting drivers into stopping. Once assistance is offered, they reportedly resort to violence in coordinated attacks.
The DCI has advised drivers, especially those transporting transit vehicles, to avoid stopping for strangers along highways. Motorists are also urged to remain alert, keep doors locked, and avoid unnecessary stops in isolated areas.
