A young man suspected of impersonating a police officer was on Monday beaten by an angry mob in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, after allegedly attempting to extort money from boda boda riders.
According to eyewitnesses, the suspect had been posing as a law enforcement officer and demanding bribes from unsuspecting riders before his cover was blown.
Furious riders and members of the public descended on him, subjecting him to a severe beating.
In a dramatic twist, when genuine police officers arrived at the scene, they were reportedly met with skepticism by the crowd and were forced to prove their identity before being allowed to intervene.
The suspect was eventually rescued by the officers, who dispersed the crowd and took him into custody.
He is said to have sustained serious injuries during the ordeal.
