A 32-year-old secondary school teacher has died in a suspected murder in Mutitu North, Kitui County, with her husband arrested after police alleged he attempted to disguise the killing as a road accident.
The deceased, identified as Hellen Ngindu Matuvi, a teacher at Itiku Secondary School, was reportedly travelling as a pillion passenger on a motorcycle ridden by her husband, Mutua Munyasia, 33, when the incident occurred at Nguni Drift.
According to police, eyewitnesses reported that the rider stopped the motorcycle by the roadside before both alighted.
The suspect is then alleged to have attacked his wife with a sharp object, stabbing her on the left side near the ear.
Investigators believe the suspect later attempted to cover up the incident by pushing the motorcycle into the drift to make it appear as though the couple had been involved in a road accident.
Members of the public rushed the injured teacher to Mutitu Mission Hospital, accompanied by the suspect.
However, she was pronounced dead on arrival after suffering severe bleeding from the injury.
Police officers who visited the hospital arrested the suspect, who had reportedly sought treatment while claiming he had also been injured in the alleged accident.
He remains in police custody as investigations into the incident continue.
The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, with residents and colleagues mourning the loss of the dedicated educator.
