How Ruto Is Using Moi-Era Tactics to Secure Re-Election, Opposition Should Be Careful

Governance analyst Ahmed Hashi has claimed that President William Ruto is employing a political strategy similar to the one used by former President Daniel arap Moi to retain power, warning the opposition against heading into the 2027 General Election while divided.

Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV, Hashi argued that President Ruto is banking on a fragmented opposition to improve his chances of winning another term.

According to the analyst, the strategy mirrors the events of the 1992 General Election, when a divided opposition enabled the late President Moi to secure victory.

“President Ruto knows he doesn’t have the votes. His strategy is to keep the opposition divided so he emerges first among equals, just as happened in 1992,” Hashi said.

Hashi cautioned opposition leaders against relying on the possibility of a presidential runoff, arguing that such an outcome would work to the incumbent’s advantage.

“Banking on a runoff is a gift to the incumbent. The opposition must unite behind one candidate before the election, not after,” he stated.

He further observed that although Kenya is in a different political era, the opposition risks repeating history if it fails to rally behind a single presidential candidate before the elections.

“Kenya is in a different political moment, and if the opposition repeats the mistakes of the past, it could hand President Ruto another term,” Hashi warned.
