Getting a KRA PIN is the first step to tax compliance in Kenya. Whether you need it for employment, opening a bank account, buying land, or filing returns, the process is straightforward and completely free. Here is exactly how to do it yourself in 2026.

What You Need Before You Start

For Kenyan citizens, you only need your National ID card. The entire process happens online through the iTax portal and takes just a few minutes.

For foreigners, the process depends on your residency status. If you have a valid work permit, you can apply online using your Alien ID number. If you are a non-resident without a work permit, you must apply manually at a KRA office with a Kenyan sponsor to assist you.

Step-by-Step Registration Process

Step 1: Visit the iTax Portal

Open your browser and go to itax.kra.go.ke. On the homepage, click New PIN Registration.

Step 2: Choose Your Taxpayer Type

Select Individual if you are applying for a personal PIN. This is what most employed persons, freelancers, and sole proprietors need. Select Non-Individual if you are registering a company or business entity.

Step 3: Select Your Registration Mode

Choose Online Form as your mode of registration. The system will guide you through the form.

Step 4: Fill in Your Personal Details

Enter your National ID number, date of birth, email address, and phone number. Make sure the details match exactly what is on your ID card because KRA verifies this information. Your email is especially important as KRA will send your login credentials and PIN certificate there.

Step 5: Complete Tax Obligation Details

You will be asked to specify your tax obligations. If you are applying for personal use such as employment, select Income Tax – Resident Individual and leave the others unchecked. If you run a business that offers VAT-taxable goods or services, select Value Added Tax. For small businesses making less than KES 5 million annually, select Turnover Tax.

Step 6: Submit Your Application

After filling all required fields, submit the form. You will receive an acknowledgment receipt with a reference number to track your application. Your KRA PIN certificate will be sent to your email instantly, and you can also download it directly from your iTax account.

What Happens After You Register

Once you have your PIN, return to the Taxpayer Registration section on the portal. Enter your PIN and set up a password to secure your account. This step also allows you to change your password for security purposes.

The entire process is free of charge. You should never pay anyone to register for a KRA PIN.

Why You Need a KRA PIN

A KRA PIN is mandatory for many transactions. You need it to file tax returns whether you are employed, self-employed, or running a business. It is required for opening a bank account in Kenya, land transactions, government tenders and business contracts, vehicle registration, and applying for business licenses. Some employers also require it before hiring you, and you need it to access financial services like loans and mortgages
