Do you want to experience the culture, technology, and safety of Japan while earning a great salary? There is a massive labor shortage in Japan, and they are actively recruiting foreigners. The best part? You can start your career there without being fluent in Japanese. Here is exactly how to do it.

The “Specified Skilled Worker” (SSW) Visa

Japan has created a special visa called the Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) Visa. This visa is specifically designed to bring in foreign workers for 16 specific industries (like caregiving, construction, agriculture, and hospitality).

  • The good news: You do not need a university degree to get this visa. You only need to pass a language and skills test.
  • The process: You must have a job offer from a Japanese company before you apply. There is also a pathway to get Permanent Residency after 10 years.

For a complete comparison of all countries, read our Ultimate Guide to Jobs Abroad.

3 Industries Where Kenyans are Hired in Japan

1. Caregiving & Elderly Care

Japan has the highest population of elderly people in the world. They are actively recruiting caregivers from Africa and Asia.

  • How to do it: You need caregiving experience and must pass a Japanese language test (at least N4 level). You do not need a university degree.
  • Salary: ¥200,000 to ¥280,000 per month (Ksh 170k – 240k).

2. IT and Engineering (The English Route)

If you are a software engineer, you can get a job in Tokyo or Osaka without speaking Japanese.

  • How to do it: Apply to “foreign-owned” tech companies or major conglomerates that use English as their office language.
  • Salary: ¥4,000,000 to ¥8,000,000 per year (Ksh 3.4 – 6.8 Million).

3. Manufacturing & Construction

If you have experience in welding, forklift operation, or factory automation, the construction industry in Japan is desperate for workers.

  • How to do it: You need to pass the technical skills assessment for your specific industry.

The 3 Best Websites for Jobs

  1. GaijinPot (gaijinpot.com): This is the #1 platform for English-speakers looking for jobs in Japan. It has a dedicated “Visa Sponsorship” filter.
  2. Jobs in Japan (jobsinjapan.com): Another excellent platform with a massive list of employers offering visa support.
  3. Hello Work: This is the Japanese government’s official job center. You can visit one after you arrive, but they also have an online portal.

What About the Language?

This is the biggest question. Technically, you do not need to speak Japanese for IT and Engineering roles. However, for the SSW visa in Caregiving, Construction, and Agriculture, you are required to pass the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) N4 level.

  • The Fix: Do not be scared. Start learning the basics of Japanese (Hiragana, Katakana) on Duolingo or YouTube. There are many cheap online courses available.

If you prefer a country with an easier language barrier, check out our guide to Jobs in the Netherlands.

How to Apply (The Step-by-Step Process)

  1. Apply for a Job on GaijinPot or Jobs in Japan. Only apply to postings that explicitly state “Visa Sponsorship Available.”
  2. Prepare your Documents: You will need your degree certificate (if you have one), a clean CV, and a photo.
  3. Get a Job Offer: You cannot apply for the visa without a job offer.
  4. Get the Certificate of Eligibility (COE): Your employer will apply for your COE at the Immigration Bureau in Japan.
  5. Apply for your Work Visa at the Embassy: Once you have your COE, apply for your visa at the Japanese Embassy in Nairobi.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: How hard is it to learn Japanese?
A: It takes about 6 months of dedicated study to pass the N4 level for the SSW visa. You can start learning today.

Q: Do I need a degree to work in Japan?
A: For the SSW visa, no. For IT roles, usually no, but your experience matters. For Engineering roles, you need a degree.

Q: Are the salaries good?
A: The base salary is lower than in North America, but the cost of living is generally cheaper, and Japanese companies offer excellent benefits and job security.
