A recent Gazette Notice detailing official charges for hiring police officers has ignited debate and curiosity online, with many Kenyans expressing disbelief at how low some of the rates appear when applied to real-life situations.

According to the notice, the hourly charges for armed officers are as follows:Inspector – KSh188 per hour, Senior Sergeant – KSh150 per hour, Corporal – KSh125 per hour, Constable – KSh100 per hour

Unarmed officers attract slightly lower rates, while hiring a police patrol vehicle is listed at KSh5,000 per hour.

For motorcycle units, the cost ranges between KSh1,200 and KSh2,000 per hour, depending on whether the officers are armed.

When placed into everyday perspective, Kenyans noted how surprisingly affordable these rates seem.

For instance, someone travelling upcountry for the Christmas holiday between December 24th and 26th could technically hire two armed Inspectors for uninterrupted escorts at a fraction of what many expected.

Others pointed out that hiring constables at just KSh100 an hour makes the figures even more striking.

The unusual affordability of the rates has sparked discussions about whether the charges reflect the true cost of deployment, how often such services are requested, and what this means for public security dynamics
