Residents of Mathira, Nyeri County, following the deaths of three young men within 72 hours, in incidents linked to a suspected toxic alcoholic drink reportedly being sold legally in local bars.
According to a widely circulated social media post, the victims consumed a brew branded Diamond Ice, packaged by a Nairobi-based company, Patiala Industries.
Locals have since nicknamed the drink “Kandaya.”
One of the victims, identified as Gakuru, popularly known as “Governor,” is said to have collapsed on the streets of Karatina town on Saturday shortly after consuming the drink, dying on the spot.
His close friend, Kamwana, a nail technician operating behind Best Lady Cosmetics in Karatina, reportedly fell ill after consuming the same drink and was admitted to Karatina District Hospital, where he succumbed on Monday evening.
Reports indicate that a third victim from Mathira also died after consuming the same drink, further heightening fears among residents.
The alarming deaths have sparked outrage and calls for urgent intervention, with demands for the immediate withdrawal of the suspected product from the market pending thorough investigations.
Concerned residents are now urging bar owners to stop stocking and selling the drink until samples are tested by the Government Chemist in collaboration with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
