Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested a suspect believed to have participated in the torching of a motor vehicle during the recent violent fuel-related protests at Githurai Roundabout.

In a statement, the DCI identified the suspect as Elisha Karanja Gatwa, who was apprehended in Ruiru following intelligence-led investigations and operations conducted by detectives pursuing key leads connected to the incident.

According to the DCI, the suspect is currently being processed as investigations continue to identify and arrest other individuals linked to the criminal act that led to destruction of property during the demonstrations.

The incident happened amid protests over rising fuel-related concerns, with some demonstrations turning chaotic and resulting in destruction of property as well as confrontations with police officers.

The DCI emphasized that acts of violence, arson, and vandalism remain serious criminal offences punishable by law.

The agency also warned individuals engaging in criminal activities during protests that detectives are closely monitoring all incidents and will relentlessly pursue those found culpable.
