The prime suspect in the gruesome murder of a family of four in Kathiani, Machakos County, has been remanded in police custody as detectives intensify investigations into one of the country’s most disturbing murder cases.
On Monday, July 20, 2026, 23-year-old Amos Wambua appeared before the Machakos Law Courts following his arrest by Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives in Kajiado.
Wambua is accused of murdering his 28-year-old pregnant wife, Grace Mungai, her two daughters, eight-year-old Joyce Mutheu and four-year-old Sarah Mungai, and her unborn child.
The court ordered that the suspect be held in police custody for five days to allow homicide detectives and forensic experts to complete investigations before formal murder charges are filed.
According to investigators, the killings allegedly took place inside Wambua’s house in Kaseveni Village, Kathiani.
Detectives believe that after the murders, he transported the bodies about three kilometres from his home and concealed them in a remote, densely vegetated thicket.
Postmortem examinations indicated that the victims died in a brutal manner.
The horrifying crime remained undiscovered until Sunday, June 14, 2026, when a neighbour’s dog reportedly emerged from nearby bushes carrying what appeared to be a child’s severed leg into a homestead.
The shocking discovery prompted residents to alert authorities, leading to a joint search by police and local residents.
The bodies were recovered the following morning.
Following the killings, Wambua allegedly fled to Kajiado, where he remained in hiding until his arrest.
Detectives claim investigations have established that his mother may have helped him evade arrest.
According to investigators, she allegedly discarded her mobile phone SIM card shortly after the murders and registered a new one, which detectives believe she used to communicate secretly with her son while he was on the run.
Investigators are also examining whether Wambua acted alone in disposing of the bodies.
Given that the victims’ remains were moved nearly three kilometres from the family home, detectives are probing whether his mother or other individuals may have assisted in transporting and concealing the bodies.
Investigations further indicate that Wambua married Grace in January 2026 while she was pregnant.
In March, his mother reportedly travelled to Kitui to bring Grace’s two daughters to live with the couple in Kaseveni Village in what investigators believe was an effort to unite the family.
However, detectives allege that barely two months after the children joined the household, Wambua turned against his family and systematically killed all four victims in a crime that has left residents of Machakos County and the country in shock.
The investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue analysing forensic evidence and determining whether additional suspects will face charges in connection with the killings. Wambua has not yet entered a plea, and the allegations against him remain before the court.
