Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has dropped a bombshell, accusing President William Ruto of bribing Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Edung Ethekon with a lavish Sh80 million house in the upmarket Karen suburb of Nairobi, in exchange for favouring the ruling party during the Ol Kalou by-election and the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Gachagua, who also leads the Democracy for Citizens Party(DCP), said that National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wa has been openly boasting about how Ruto purchased the Karen property for IEBC chairman Ethekon, a claim that, if true, would represent one of the most brazen acts of electoral institution capture in Kenya’s political history.
Gachagua went further, revealing that Ruto has allegedly issued direct orders to the IEBC chairman to declare UDA candidate Sammy Muchina the winner of the Ol Kalou by-election regardless of what happens on the ground, including in the event of violence or loss of life.
The former Deputy President also trained his fire on Laikipia East Member of Parliament Mwangi Kiunjuri, accusing him of personally calling presiding officers ahead of the by-election and threatening them to accept bribes and rig the poll in favour of Muchina. According to Gachagua, the intimidation of electoral officials has been systematic and coordinated from the very top of the ruling establishment.
Perhaps most alarming of all is Gachagua’s claim that chiefs and assistant chiefs across Ol Kalou constituency have been assigned roles within the electoral process to manage and manipulate the outcome of the election.
He revealed that all chiefs and assistant chiefs in the area were summoned to a meeting with Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Ichung’wa, where they were reportedly briefed in detail on how to rig the election in UDA’s favour.
If Gachagua’s allegations are accurate, what is being planned in Ol Kalou is not an election. It is a state-orchestrated theft of democracy, carried out with the full machinery of government, from the IEBC chairman’s office all the way down to the village chief’s desk.
