Concern is growing over the reported disappearance of Christin Wanjiru, a Clinical Officer serving under the County Government of Kajiado, after she was allegedly arrested by police officers and taken to Kitengela Police Station.
The Kenya Union of Clinical Officers (KUCO) has raised the alarm over the circumstances surrounding her reported arrest and subsequent disappearance from known police custody.
According to KUCO, Wanjiru was arrested by police officers and detained at Kitengela Police Station, where she was not promptly informed of the reasons for her arrest.
The Union later received information that she was removed from the police station and picked up in a Subaru vehicle appearing in a photograph attached to its statement.
Her destination and current whereabouts remain unknown, according to the Union.
KUCO has now demanded that the police immediately account for Wanjiru, including why she was arrested, whether her arrest was formally recorded, who the arresting officers were, and who authorised her removal from the station.
The Union also wants to know whether she was formally released or transferred, where she was taken, who currently has custody of her and whether she is safe.
“OCS KITENGELA POLICE STATION: WHERE IS CHRISTIN WANJIRU?” KUCO posed.
The Union noted that Article 49 of the Constitution guarantees arrested persons the right to be promptly informed of the reason for their arrest and to communicate with an advocate and other persons whose assistance is necessary.
It further cited Article 244, which requires the National Police Service to uphold professionalism, discipline, transparency and accountability.
KUCO urged the relevant State and human-rights institutions to intervene and establish what happened to Wanjiru.
“If Christin was lawfully transferred to another police station, investigative agency or other lawful custody, that information must be disclosed immediately,” the Union stated.
